CHAPTER 12

Lucas

With its sterile smell and the soft hum of medical equipment, the room felt like a world away from my natural realm. I realized why I'd recognized the older woman as I stepped in. It was clear to me now.

Her frail voice, tinged with rage despite her weakness, broke the silence. "You... you..." she said, her eyes narrowing as she recognized me. There was a fierce intensity in her gaze, belying her age and frailty.

It was hard seeing her like this. This wasn’t the woman I remember, young and vibrant and happy. Instead, she was a shadow of what she wanted.

I approached her bed with slow, deliberate steps, maintaining a calm demeanor despite the tension. "Angelina, it is good to see you," I said, trying to bridge the gap of our shared history. It was the truth. I meant every word. I never thought I would see her again, let alone like this.

Her voice grew firmer, a defiance shining through her frailty. "I am not afraid of you," she declared, her tone resolute. That hurt me, honestly, that she saw me as a threat instead of what we used to be together.

I responded with a touch of nostalgia. "Why should you be? We are old friends," I replied, attempting to evoke a past connection. I had so many memories with her that we spent laughing and sharing intimate secrets we had never shared with anyone.

Instead, she corrected me sharply, her hand gripping the blanket tightly, her knuckles whitening. "We were old friends," she said, emphasizing our distance now. The anger in her eyes was difficult to see, and maybe because I knew, on some level, I deserved it.

I stopped a few feet away from her bed, respecting her space. "And anyway, it is I who should be afraid of you. Your spells, your curses still hold," I acknowledged, hinting at the power she once wielded. I said it in a way to complement her and build her up after I did so much to take her down in the past inadvertently, of course, but true nonetheless.

She threatened me with a fierce determination. "Step one more foot toward me, and I shall curse you again worse than you have ever been cursed before," she warned, her eyes flashing with a vestige of her former strength. Now that hurt, especially for her to truly see me as a threat, let alone feel that she needed to issue me a warning, told me without a doubt that we’ve come so far from where we once were.

I countered her threat, trying to remind her of our shared history. "You wouldn't dare; you are much too kind for that. And besides, we have a history," I said, my voice carrying a hint of persuasion. I hoped to remind her of who she really was inside, beyond the anger beyond the hurt.

Her suspicion was evident in her voice. "What do you want?" she asked, her tone heavy with distrust. Her tone was starting to grate on me.
